The 46th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team, riding a two-match winning streak, takes a 6-5 record to Furman (4-7) for a matchup with the Paladins at 2:30 pm Wednesday. With their win over South Carolina Sunday, the Demon Deacons moved above the .500 mark for the first time since Feb. 20. Furman has won three straight matches and is 3-0 at home this season. Wake Forest swept the Paladins, 7-0 last year in Winston-Salem and has won nine straight against Furman overall since 1995.
Deacons Knock Off Two Higher-Ranked Opponents ...
The Deacs are on a roll after winning both of their matches last week. On Tuesday, Wake Forest traveled to New Orleans and defeated #40 Tulane, 4-3. The match was tied at three before Deacon freshman Andrew Hamar pulled out a thrilling 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 comeback victory over Tulane's Hannu Piiroinen at No. 4 singles. Then on Sunday in Winston-Salem, Wake Forest knocked off 19th-ranked South Carolina, 4-2. This was the Demon Deacons' first win over the Gamecocks since 1995.
A Freshman Will Lead Them ...
Wake Forest freshman Todd Paul has compiled a 9-2 singles record so far this season, including six straight victories. The Stamford, Conn. native is 7-2 at No. 3 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 for the Deacs. Dating back to the fall season, Paul has 22 total singles victories this year which is five more than any of his Deacon teammates.
Spice Racking Up The Honors ...
Demon Deacon junior Derrick Spice has been named ACC Player of the Week twice in 2004. Spice received the honor for the first time Feb. 9 after knocking off William and Mary's 26th-ranked Jeff Kader at No. 1 singles. The North Olmsted, Ohio native was recognized again two weeks later on Feb. 23 after winning a doubles match and two No. 1 singles contests, including an upset of Old Dominion's 13th-ranked Izak van der Merwe. Overall this season, Spice has a 6-5 singles record and has played the No. 1 position every match for Wake Forest. Four of Spice's six victories have come against opponents ranked higher than him.
Zinn Reaches 100 ...
With Wake Forest's 4-3 victory at Tulane on Mar. 9, Jeff Zinn earned his 100th victory as head coach of the Demon Deacons. Zinn owns a 101-82 record now in his eighth year at the helm for Wake Forest and is just three victories shy of 200 in his 15-year career as a head coach. Zinn is just the third Wake Forest head tennis coach to reach 100 victories.
