GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The 46th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team won its third consecutive match and improved to 7-5 on the season with a 5-2 victory over Furman Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville. The Paladins fall to 4-8 with the loss.
The Deacons came out of the gate strong, taking all three doubles matches to earn the day's first point. Wake Forest then extended its lead to 3-0 after the first two singles matches. Liron Strauss picked up a straight-set victory over Brian Cook at No. 5 while Andrew Simpson came out on top in a 6-4, 6-3 match against Furman's Kevin Lackey at No. 6.
The Paladins got their first point when Patrick Fillnow knocked off David Loewenthal, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. But a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory by Wake Forest freshman Todd Paul at No. 1 clinched the match for the Deacs. This marked Paul's first match at No. 1 singles this season.
The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend when they head north for two ACC matches. Wake Forest will face Virginia on Saturday in Charlottesville and Maryland Sunday in College Park.
