STATESBORO, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team sits in first place after 36 holes of The Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, held at the par 72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club. The Demon Deacons posted two scores under par in Saturday's two rounds of the 54-hole event to take a one-stroke lead over Florida, the nation's top-ranked team, into Sunday's final round.
Wake Forest shot a one-under 287 on the opening 18, good enough for a fourth-place tie. The Deacons then vaulted into the top spot during the second round with a six-under 282, the low team score of the day.
Wake currently sits at seven-under 569. Florida is one stroke back at 570, while Duke is third at 571 and Ohio State sits in fourth at 573. South Carolina and Augusta State (both -4) and Georgia (-1) are the only other schools among the 15-team field currently under par.
Deacon senior Bill Haas, the nation's top-ranked golfer, leads the field with a 12-under 132 through 36 holes. He is six strokes ahead of his nearest competitor, Georgia's Chris Kirk. Haas shot a 68-64 on Saturday, with two eagles and five birdies in his second round.
Sophomore Kyle Reifers is in a fifth-way tie for seventh at three-under 141. Riefers recorded rounds of 72-69 on Saturday and is gunning for his fourth top 10 finish over the last five events.
Freshman Chad Wilcox is tied for 32nd at two-over 146 for the tournament with rounds of 75-71. Fellow rookie Sean Moore is tied for 56th at six-over 150 (72-78). Sophomore Alex Yates, competing in his first event of the spring, is tied for 68th at 10-over 154 (76-78).
The final round of the Schenkel takes place Sunday. The Demon Deacons, who also won this event last season, will look to capture their first team title of the 2003-04 season in addition to their seventh overall Schenkel title. No other school has won more than six titles in the history of the event.
