TALLAHASSEE, FL.-- The 48th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team came back from two matches down to knock off #25 Florida State, 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons are now 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the ACC while the Seminoles fall to 11-6 and 3-2 in the conference.
After dropping the doubles point, Wake Forest came back to take four of the six singles matches and pull off the upset victory. After 37th-ranked Derrick Spiced dropped a straight-set match to #19 Mat Cloer at No. 1, the Deacs' Todd Paul knocked off #51 Jonathas Sucupira, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
A straight-set victory by Liron Strauss at No. 6 brought Wake Forest back and evened the score with three matches remaining. But Florida State's Chip Webb gave the Seminoles a 3-2 advantage with his 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Andrew Hamar at No. 5.
Thanks to a hard fought, 3-6, 7-6 (9), 6-2 victory by David Loewenthal at No. 3, the Deacons again tied things up with the deciding match unfolding at No. 4. With the contest tied up at one set apiece, Wake Forest sophomore Brett Ross held on for an 8-6 victory in a third-set tiebreaker, clinching the match for himself and his team.
The Demon Deacons return to action Wednesday when they travel to Chapel Hill for another ACC matchup with the Tar Heels of North Carolina at 3:30 pm.
