Clemmons, N.C. - Eight time defending champion Duke recorded an opening round five-under 279, and leads by six shots after the first day of play at the 16th ACC Women's Golf Championship. The tournament is being held at the par 71, 6348-yard course at Salem Glen Golf and Country Club.

North Carolina is in second place after a one-over 285. Closely behind is Wake Forest after firing a 290 while Florida State is in fourth place with 293 strokes. NC State is in fifth place after the team recorded a 303 on the opening day. Rounding out the scoring are Maryland and Virginia, who shot a 306 and 307 respectively.

Meaghan Francella of North Carolina holds the individual lead after carding five-under-par 66. Trailing by one stroke is Duke's Brittany Lang, who fired a four-under 67.

The Demon Deacons were led by junior Ashley Hoagland, who shot a one-under 70 to be in fourth place after the first round. In sixth place is Christine Hallstrom, who carded a round of even par 71. One stroke behind her is Deb Means, who is currently in 10th position after carding a 72. Freshmen Mandy Goins and Jessica Castle shot a 77 and 80 respectively and finished in 23rd and 30th place.

Round two begins when Maryland and Virginia will tee off at eight in the morning on hole number one. Florida State and North Carolina State will tee off at 8:35 while Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest will tee off at 9:10.
