NEW LONDON, N.C. - Sean Moore fired a career-low five-under 67, but Wake Forest dropped to third place as the Demon Deacons carded a two-under 286 in the second round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship. The 51st annual tournament is taking place at Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.
The Demon Deacons (283-286=569) are seven-under -- three shots back of second place NC State and 10 shots behind Clemson. After a first-round 284, the defending ACC and national champion Tigers carded a 13-under round of 275. The Wolfpack moved into second with their 10-under round of 278. Georgia Tech fired a four-under 284 to vault into fourth place. All nine ACC teams are participating in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on the par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
Wake Forest, which got as low as 15-under, actually held a two-shot lead over Clemson thru 15 holes, but the Deacs were victimized by a pair of double bogies, a bogey and triple bogey on the par-4, 427-yard 16th hole. In all, the Demon Deacons' five players played the 16th hole at eight-over par. The 16th hole played as the toughest hole on the course in Saturday's second round -- yielding an average score of 4.44.
Friday's first-round leader North Carolina (+3) shot a three-over 291 and sits in fifth place, one stroke ahead of Duke (+4) -- which shot a round of five-over 293. Florida State and Virginia are tied for seventh at 10-over, while Maryland (+32) rounds out the rest of the field.
Moore's round of 67, which tied for low round of the day, moved the freshman into second place in the individual race at seven-under. Moore (70-67=137) trails Jack Ferguson (69-67=136) of Clemson by a single shot.
Deacon senior and first-round leader Bill Haas (67-73=140) birdied the opening four holes of the second round, but struggled on the back nine on his way to a round of one-over par 73. Haas sits in sixth place at four-under, trailing Nicholas Thomspon (-5) of Georgia Tech, Stephen Lewton (-6) of NC State, Matt Hendrix (-6) of Clemson, Moore and Ferguson. Haas was unable to extend his school record of consecutive rounds at equal/under par to 14 and failed to break 70 for the first time in the past eight round -- another school record.
WFU junior Doug Manchester (71-74=145) carded a two-over par round of 74 and currently sits in a tie for 15th place. Sophomore Kyle Reifers (75-72=147) carded the second best round of the day for the Deacs with an even par 72. Reifers is in a tie for 25th place.
Freshman Chad Wilcox (75-78=153) shot a six-over round of 78 and currently stands in a tie for 31st place at nine-over par for the tournament.
The third round of the ACC Championship gets underway Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Tee times and live scoring are available at www.golfstat.com.
