Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest Field Hockey team adds four recruits to the 2004 team, Head Coach Jennifer Averill announced Monday. The Deacons have won consecutive ACC regular season, ACC Tournament and NCAA National Titles, with a 42-3 mark over the past two seasons.
Katelyn Hughson hails from Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington, Massachusetts, where she participates in Varsity Field Hockey and Cheerleading. The captain of her team, Katelyn is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Class Secretary and Treasurer, a recipient of the Clarke Memorial Scholarship, and a volunteer for the Alumni Phone-a-thon and Homecoming planning committees. She is active with her church youth group and a leader of Vacation Bible School. Deacon Assistant Coach Neil MacMillan notes, "Katelyn is a very athletic goalkeeper who has a lot of potential. She has very solid basic skills and will develop well as she gets used to hockey at the next level."
Chelsea Cipriani, a left inside attacker from West Deptford High School in Westville, New Jersey, tallied six goals and ten assists her senior season. A two-time captain and four year varsity starter, Cipriani leads her team with 49 career goals and 50 career assists. In her junior year, she led the Colonial Conference in scoring with 21 goals; she was named 1st Team All South Jersey by the Courier Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Gloucester County Times, which also named her Player of the Year. She played Level II Futures in 2001 and 2002 and moved to Level I Futures in 2003. Chelsea's talents extend beyond the field hockey field; she was a varsity starter her sophomore and junior seasons for the basketball team, and is a member of the National Honor Society. "Chelsea is tenacious and fearless," says Averill. "She is extremely coachable and has a relentless work either. She is young but will adapt quickly to our style of play."
The Millfield School in Somerset England offers Rachel Thomas to the 2004 Deacon roster. Thomas is an all around gifted athlete who holds the highest fitness rating in her school this year. She reached the county level in hockey, tennis, soccer, track & field and speed skating. She has played on the Millfield team as a mid-fielder from 1996-2003. She was the captain of the victorious National Schools Championship Team in 2001 and 2002. "Rachel is a very adept midfield player, who can distribute the ball well," says MacMillan. "She has had instruction from one of the best schools in England and hence has very good individual skills. She will be a great addition to the midfield and could make a significant contribution as a freshman."
Tamar Meijer is the team captain of her Hervormd Lyceum Zuid squad and is also the head lay-out artist for the school's newspaper. She has played on many club teams around Holland and has been successful at all levels. "Tamar will add great strength to our forward and midfield lines," says Averill. "She is extremely threatening inside the attacking 25. She has great composure and awareness."
