After 36 holes and 12 hours of golf today, Wake Forest's men's golf team is in fifth place at the Bank of Tennessee Collegiate Championship at The Ridges in Jonesborough, TN. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, which includes 15 of the nation's top college teams, concludes Sunday at the 7,147-yard par 72 course.
The Demon Deacons, ranked 29th nation in one early preseason poll, is just six strokes off the pace set by Oklahoma, heading into Sunday's final round. The Sooners are four-under par, two shots ahead of Clemson, TCU and Tennessee. Wake Forest is at 2-over par, two shots in front of sixth-place LSU and five shots better than seventh-place Virginia.
Wake Forest freshman Webb Simpson of Raleigh is enjoying an impressive career debut. Simpson is in third place, just two shots behind Oklahoma's Anthony Kim and one shot in front of Clemson's Brian Duncan. Wake senior Kyle Reifers is at 1-over par 145, nine strokes off the pace. WFU's Chris McCartin is at 3-over 147, sophomore Sean Moore is at 4-over 148, Doug Manchester is at 6-over 150.
"We played pretty well today," head coach Jerry Haas said. "We lost some shots there in the final few holes. We would be right there with Oklahoma had we finished better, but we're OK."
