Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest field hockey team hosts the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins on Saturday at 1 p.m. Wake Forest enters the contest fresh off two wins last weekend. The Deacons defeated Kent State, 4-2, and knocked off No.1 Michigan State, 3-2. Wake Forest, 8-1, has played only one ACC game this season, a 4-3 overtime loss to Duke. The Terrapins, 9-0, have yet to face an ACC opponent in 2004.
Maryland leads the all-time series, 15-6, however the Deacons currently hold a four game winning streak. Wake Forest twice beat Maryland last season. In the first match up last season, Wake Forest landed a first ever Deacon win in College Park. 2004 graduate Katie Ackerman, current junior Ariel Meyers and senior Kelly Dostal led the Deacons to the 3-1 victory. Amber McQuillan was the lone scorer for the Terrapins.
The teams met again in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. Meyers, Dostal, Kristi Harshman and Maeke Boreel tapped in goals for the Deacons en route to consecutive ACC Championship titles. Jackie Ciconte scored the only goal for Maryland, as Wake Forest took the game, 4-1.
Maryland is one of two remaining undefeated teams in the country. The Terrapins are joined by ACC rival, North Carolina. Wake Forest, Michigan State, Duke, Richmond and Harvard are the only teams in Division I to have just one loss.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Kentner Stadium. Live stats for the game will be available at www.WakeForestSports.com. Admission is free for the event.
