CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Junior Cotelia Bond-Young put in 20 points in the first half including six three-pointers, leading the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a 78-63 victory over the University of Miami, Thursday night. The win for the Deacs not only marks the first ACC victory for both the team and head coach Mike Petersen, it also marks Petersen's 200th career victory.

In his first year as the head coach at Wake Forest, Petersen boasts 11 years head coaching experience and 23 years overall for a career record of 200-131. In his first year with the Deacs, he has led the team to the most successful start since the 1987-88 season.

Bond-Young, who is currently second in the nation and first in the ACC for three-pointers made, finished the night with the game-high 27 points, five steals and four assists. Senior Erin Ferrell added a double-double, her fourth of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive. Porsche Jones added nine points and eight boards, while Kelia Evans closed the night with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Deacs ran the Hurricanes out on an early 11-2 run that included a pair of three's by Jones. From that point didn't look back and Bond-Young took the reigns of the game from beyond the arc. At 18-7 she hit her second three of the stanza. Dropping in 14 of the next 20 points for Wake, including four more three-pointers helped push the Deacs ahead. Although Miami's Tamara James was able to find 14 points on the half, it couldn't match the 20 by Bond-Young that put Wake in the locker room 44-31.

In the second half, the Canes came out hard, immediately taking the Deacs on a 9-4 run, which in turn helped close the gap to 10. A three pointer by Jones helped Wake stay in the lead, but five points by Katie Hayek at 53-31 brought it within two. A fast break by Yalonda McCormick tied the score at 57 all, but Wake must have been teasing the Hurricanes because a 18-2 run put the Deacs back in the lead. Although three in a row by James helped a little, it wasn't enough as the Deacs earned their first ACC victory of the season.

On the night, the Deacs were again strong from the line, shooting 81%. Pulling down 45 boards, the Deacs were outrebounded by the Hurricanes who had 49, but Wake was able to force 16 turnovers and have 10 steals.

Wake Forest will return home to take on Duke, Jan. 19 in Joel Coliseum. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
