Winston-Salem, N.C. -- - Junior Haley Scott scored the gamewinner and freshman Christine Suggs added one for security, as the No. 1 Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Richmond, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Kentner Stadium. The Demon Deacons, currently 10-0 on the season, increase their winning streak to 14 and improve their non-conference streak to 59.
Suggs, who now has six goals on the season, had six shots in addition to one assist. Junior Lauren Crandall had the game-high eight shots and also had an assist. As a whole, Wake Forest outshot Richmond 32 to five and took 11 corners to the Spider's three.
Michelle Kasold scored the first goal at the 14 minute mark with a shot that was a rebound off one by Scott. Whitney Wells responded 10 minutes later for the Spiders with a clean shot off the right side of the circle. Wake held onto the possession of the ball for the remainder of the half with the exception of the last minute. As the clock ran down, Richmond brought it into the circle and pulled penalty corner from the Deacs. With no time remaining on the clock, the Spiders took the corner and Jodi Murphy connected on the second shot, putting them up by one at the half.
Trailing at the half for the second time this season, Wake went into the stanza fighting. Taking three shots in the first four minutes, the Deacs had the ball inside the circle and kept it there. Earning a penalty corner, Crandall found Harshman, who finished it off to tie the game.
The next two goals came three minutes apart with Scott scoring the gamewinner off a short pass from Suggs right in front of the cage. Then at 61:51, the Spider goalie went down outside the cage and Suggs was able to take the ball away, dribble around her and finish it off.
Michelle Swartz, the Spider goalkeeper, earned 17 saves on the day, while Kristina Gagliardi had two for the Deacs.
The Demon Deacons, who played three games in four days this weekend, will next travel to Louisville on Oct. 8. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
