
Volleyball Triumphs In Five

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team had five players hit in double-figures and fended off a two game comeback by Miami to defeat the Hurricanes, 3-2 (30-18, 30-27, 26-30, 23-30, 17-15) in ACC volleyball action Saturday night. The win improves the Demon Deacons to 11-9 overall and 4-7 in the conference, while dropping the Hurricanes to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in the ACC.
Freshman Natalie Mullikin slammed down an team-high 16 kills off 30 attacks and five errors, in addition to six block assists. Senior Christy Williams was also strong at the net with five block assists, 14 kills and two aces. Jessica Furlong, Lauren Peterson and Erin Borhart rounded out the Deacs in double-figures with 15, 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Wake Forest jumped out to a quick and permanent lead with a 10-1 run after a tie at eight all. Out-hitting the `Canes .519 to .161, the Deacs easily took the first game, 30-18. In the second, it was closer between the teams, with eight lead changes and 14 ties. It wasn't until a kill from Mullikin and another from Peterson at 28-26 that gave the Deacs the advantage that they needed.
Miami fought back in the third and shined at the net with 10 block assists. Poor attacking by the Deacs hurt and Miami was able to take it, 30-26. In the fourth, the score remained close until the 19 all mark, but an 8-1 run gave Miami the edge and pushed the match into five.
The fifth game was exciting with the two teams trading the lead four times. Wake finally grabbed it and brought the game to match point, but two consecutive points by Miami kept the game from ending. A kill by Mullikin and then a kill by Furlong ended the match, 17-15.
Wake Forest will remain home and host Clemson and Georgia Tech, Oct. 28 and 29, respectively.
