Deacons In Driver's Seat In Richmond

RICHMOND, VA -- Wake Forest senior Kyle Reifers leads sophomore teammate Webb Simpson by one stroke and the Demon Deacons hold an eight-stroke lead with 18 holes remaining at the Mattaponi (pronounced matta-pone-aye) Springs Collegiate Shootout.

Eighth-ranked Wake Forest and 14 other teams played 36 holes today on the 6,937-yard, par-72 layout. The final 18 holes are scheduled for Tuesday.

Reifers shot a sizzling 67-66--133 for an 11-under par score to lead 74 other golfers in the individual race. Simpson shot an opening-round 65, tying for the 11^th-lowest round in school history, and is one stroke back at 10-under par. Simpson is three strokes in front of a group of three golfers tied for third place at 7-under 137.

As a team, the Demon Deacons shot back-to-back rounds of 9-under 279 today for a 558 total (18-under par). Wake Forest is eight strokes in front of second-place Tulsa (566). Kent State (567) is in third place, followed by Xavier (569) and North Carolina (574).

Wake Forest is looking for its first tournament victory since winning the NCAA East Regional in the spring.

Marc Gladson, the only true freshman on the Deacon roster, is at 1-over par after 36 holes. Gladson's scores do not count toward the team score because he is playing as an individual.

Other Wake Forest scorers included junior Sean Moore, who shot a 74-71--145 (+1), sophomore Chris McCartin (73-73--146, +2), and Chad Wilcox (74-83--157).
