Volleyball Blanks Virginia Tech, 3-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Erin Borhart closed her final home match in style, hitting a season-high .692 and adding 40 assists and three blocks, to lead the Wake Forest volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-17, 30-26, 30-25) victory over Virginia Tech, Saturday night in Reynolds Gym.
The win for the Demon Deacons improves their overall record to 17-12 and 10-10 in the conference. At home in 2005, Wake Forest finished with a 12-3 record.
Redshirt freshman Jessica Furlong closed the night with the team-high 13 kills, while at the net, Natalie Mullikin had the match-high six block assists. As a team, the Deacs had 18 block assists and one block solo, while the Hokies had 10 block assists and one solo stuff.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the first game, forcing a Virginia Tech time-out. Coming out of the break, the Hokies won four consecutive points, but the Deacs answered it with a 7-1 run that caused another time-out. Winning 10 of the next 14 points, Wake Forest took the 1-0 advantage, 30-17.
In game two, the Deacs took the early 6-1 lead, but an 11-2 run by the Hokies switched things around. An ace by Williams tied it up at 15 and then the two teams battled for the permanent lead, knotting the score five more times. Fighting for the game, Wake Forest slammed down a trio of kills and then a block assist from Mullikin and Shannan Homan to take the second game, 30-26.
The final game was a tight, with the two teams knotting the score 14 times. It wasn't until the 23 all mark that the Deacs took control with a 7-2 run. Out-hitting Virginia Tech, .255 to .170, the Demon Deacons closed the match, 30-25.
Statistically Wake Forest led in every category, including knocking down 54 kills to the Hokies 47. Defensivley, Natasha Schaefer had 17 of the teams 49 digs, while Borhart added eight. Senior Klarysa Henry added seven.
Wake Forest will conclude its season with a road trip against Florida State and Miami. The Demon Deacons will first face the Hurricanes on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. and then the Seminoles on Friday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.
