Women's Basketball Cruises Past Winston-Salem State, 97-43

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- - The Wake Forest women's basketball team allowed Winston-Salem State just 16 points and shot 65 percent from the floor in the second half, en route to a 97-43 exhibition game victory, Thursday night in Joel Coliseum.
Four players scored in double figures, including last year's leading scorer Cotelia Bond-Young. Earning 21 points, Bond-Young scored the game-high, while adding three assist and four steals. Freshman Deirdre Naughton was not far behind with 19 points, in addition to adding seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
The Demon Deacons took the lead early in the first half with Bond-Young and Naughton both putting up seven points. Going into the break with an eight point lead, the Deacs came out flying in the second half, running their lead up to 30 with a 23-6 run. Allowing the Rams just two points, Wake Forest continued to push ahead and scored 16 unanswered over a six minute span. With less than two minutes remaining and their lead at 50, the Deacs continued to pressure the Rams and took seven more before time ran out.
As a team, the Demon Deacons scored 36 points in the paint and the bench put up 42. Totaling 25 steals on the night, the Deacs added 41 points off turnovers. Redshirt junior Porsche' Jones closed the night with the game-high six steals, in addition to adding 11 points and eight assists. For Winston-Salem State Candice Sanders was the lone player in double-figures with 10 points. Sanders also pulled down the game-high nine boards.
The Demon Deacons will officially open their season at the Joel Annex on Nov. 18 against Mercer. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
