Winston-Salem, NC - Tamar Meijer and Lauren Crandall were named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad announced the organization on Friday. Meijer and Crandall achieved outstanding records in the classroom this fall, while helping the Deacons win a third straight national championship.
Crandall, a native of Doylestown, Pa., earns Academic Squad honors for the second straight year. She was third on the team in shots and goals scored this season. She was named All-ACC--the only Deacon sophomore to garner such honors, named to the NFHCA First Team All-South Region, and she was named a third team All-American by the NFHCA and by WomensFieldHockey.com. Crandall became only the third sophomore in Deacon field hockey history to earn All-American honors; only Kelly Doton and Kelly Dostal accomplished the feat during their sophomore seasons. Crandall was most recently selected to the U-21 US National Team.
Meijer made an immediate contribution her freshman season as a Deacon. The only newcomer to start and play in every game, Meijer scored 24 goals in 2004, the most by any Deacon during a freshman season. Her goal total ranked fourth in the ACC, as did her points total (51). She was second in the ACC in goals per game (1.04) and fifth in the ACC in shots (82) and shots per game (3.57). Meijer scored seven goals during the four games of the NCAA Tournament, the most ever by a freshman and the second most ever by any one athlete in the tournaments history. She tallied two goals in the Deacons 3-0 rout of Duke in the National Championship game, tying a record for the most goals by any individual in a championship match. Meijer was named to the WomensFieldHockey.com All-Rookie team.
