Track Teams Finish Seventh At ACC Championship

Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams each finished seventh at the ACC Championship this weekend in Chapel Hill, NC. Several provisional qualifying marks led the way as both the men and women finished with 38 points.
Michael Bingham got off to an outstanding start, winning each of his first two heptathlon events, the 60 meter dash and the long jump. The freshman from Burlington, NC finished third overall in the heptathlon with 5,146 points, a personal best and just shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark, 5,200 points.
Freshman Molly Kennedy also faired well on day one, placing sixth overall in the women's pentathlon with a personal best 3,346 points. Kennedy jumped to personal bests in the high jump (5-02.75) and the long jump (16-00.5), and threw her best shot put (36-04.75). She was one of only two freshmen to place in the top-10 of the pentathlon.
On day two, Oderah Nwaeze ran a personal best 60 meter dash time of 7.16. Junior Eric Seely qualified out of the preliminary 200 meter dash race with a 22.03. Mike Loyd and Willie Idlette were not far behind with times of 22.45 and 22.73 respectively.
Seely ran a 48.81 to qualify out of the preliminary 400 meter dash, as did Brad Wharton in the one mile run, with a time of 4:13.36. Sean Stevens placed seventh in the men's 5,000 meter run with a 14:35.35.
Mike Loyd ran the 60 meter hurdles in eight seconds flat, good enough to automatically qualify to the next round of the race.
Michelle Sikes placed second in the women's one mile preliminary race, running a personal best 4:53.31, automatically qualifying her for the final race on day three. In the finals of that event, Sikes ran a 4:55.09 to finish fifth overall.
Annie Bersagel picked up another NCAA provisional qualifying time this season after capturing the 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:20.02. Erin Franklin finished sixth in that event, with a time of 16:58.67.
The women's distance medley finished third, running an 11:40.76.
On the third and final day of competition at Chapel Hill's Eddie Smith Field House, Bersagel placed second in the 3,000 meter race, with an NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 9:27.09. Caitlin Chrisman provisionally qualified as well, smoking her personal best with a 9:35.53.
Day three for the men featured Seely finishing seventh in the 200 meter finals with a 22.36 and third in the finals of the 400 meter race, with a 48.82. Wharton finished fifth in the mile run with a 4:11.50. Stevens ran a personal best 8:19.12 in the 3,000 meter race, good for a sixth place finish.
Loyd finished fifth in the 60 meter hurdles, with an 8.13. Jesse Richert matched a personal best 6-8 high jump mark, finishing tied for sixth in that event.
Wake Forest continues indoor track competition at the USATF Indoor Championships next weekend.
