Deacons Finish Two Track Meets This Weekend

Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams finished competing at the Meyo Invitational and the Carolina Classic this weekend. Mike Loyd won the 60 meter hurdles, Annie Bersagel earned an NCAA provisionally qualifying time and Eric Seely broke a Deacon record, as Wake Forest combined for 16 top-10 finishes at the Carolina Classic and 10 at the Meyo Invitational.

The Meyo Invitational, known for impressive mile performances, featured several Wake Forest women this weekend. In the one mile run, three Demon Deacons finished in the top-15. Michelle Sikes finished eighth with a time of 4:55.43, while Caitlin Chrisman finished 10th with a time of 4:57.54. Hanna Bremler rounded out the Wake participants with a 13th place finish with a time of 4:59.87.

In the 3000 meter race, Annie Bersagel finished seventh with a time of 9:31.67, which was a NCAA provisional mark and a personal best. Erin Franklin finished third in the 5000 meters, with a time of 16:57.86, also a personal best, by nearly 20 seconds.

On the men's side, Eric Seely finished seventh in both the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. Chris Catton and Brian Smith finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the mile rule. In the 5000 meter run, Shane Ahlers earned a 13th place finish with a time of 14:34.44, while Brandon Bartholomew was not far behind with a 15th place finish and a time of 14:41.17.

At the Carolina Invitational, Melissa Council finished fifth in the 200 meter dash with a 25.13 mark. She also finished 15th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.31), which qualified her for the final round, where she placed 11th with a 9.26. Liz Hankinson finished 14th in the mile (5:19.12) and Merry Placer earned a third place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.48.

Cassy Richards placed third in the long jump after leaping for 5.67 meters. Catherine Muehleib threw the shot put 12.72 meters, earning her a seventh place spot.

Mike Loyd paced the men with a fourth place 22.24 in the 200 meter dash. Willie Idlette joined him in that race, with a 22.83 16th place finish. Loyd went on to place first in the preliminary 60 meter hurdles race with an 8.05 time and capture the title in the finals of that race as well with a 7.95 time. Michael Bingham placed seventh in that preliminary race, followed by a fourth place finish in the finals.

Michael Fernbach and Westin Galloway raced in the 800 meter run, placing eighth and tenth respectively. Jared Hill finished fourth in the 5,000 meter race, with a time of 15:54.58

Jesse Richert jumped to 1.97 meters in the high jump, good for a fourth place tie. Adam Gabrault threw the weight 15.98 meters for a seventh place finish.

The Deacons return to the track next weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.
