Deacons Open Fifth Straight NCAA Tournament Appearance Thursday

Wake Forest, which produced one of the most successful regular seasons in Demon Deacon basketball history, embarks on NCAA Tournament play Thursday at Cleveland's Wolstein Center against Southern Conference champion Chattanooga (7:10 pm/CBS). The fifth-ranked Demon Deacons, 26-5 overall and 13-3 in the ACC, finished second in the ACC standings, one game behind regular season champion North Carolina. Wake Forest, the Albuquerque Regional's No. 2 seed, is coming off an 81-65 loss to NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament last Friday in Washington, DC. The Wake Forest-Chattanooga winner takes on the winner of No. 7 seed West Virginia and No. 10 seed Creighton Saturday at approximately 8 pm. The winner of that game advances to the Sweet 16 in Albuquerque, NM. Chattanooga, 20-10, won the Southern Conference Tournament March 3-5, beating UNC Greensboro in the finals, 66-62. The Mocs are a balanced team with senior Mindaugas Katelynas (12.0 ppg and 9.1 rpg) leading the way. The Deacons are led by juniors Justin Gray (16.3 ppg) and Eric Williams (16.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg), both second team All-ACC selections, and sophomore All-American Chris Paul (14.9 ppg and 6.6 apg). Thursday's game will mark the second meeting ever between the Demon Deacons and Mocs. The two teams also met in the first round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament in Nashville, which the Deacons won 81-58.
