Winston-Salem, NC - Members of the Wake Forest track team competed at the annual Stanford University Invitational this weekend. Six Deacons set personal bests, three set regional qualifying marks and Annie Bersagel posted a school record and automatic qualifying time in the 10,000 meter race.
Bersagel, already a two-time All-ACC and two-time All-American in the 10,000 meter race, shattered her own school record of 33:23.00, which she set in 2003. Friday night, Bersagel ran a 33:02.13, nearly a full minute faster than the automatic qualifying standard. It was the fastest mark by nearly four minutes of an ACC athlete this season.
Caitlin Chrisman offered a 16:29.61 in the 5,000 meter race, to earn a regional qualifying mark and a personal best. Sikes, who last weekend earned a regional qualifying mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in her first attempt at the event, earned her second qualifying mark in as many weeks this season. The sophomore from Lakewood, Ohio ran a 16:29.02 in the 5,000 meter event. She and Chrisman bettered the previous ACC season best in that event by almost a full minute.
Sean Stevens also competed in the 5,000 meter event, running 18 seconds better than his personal best. Stevens finished 14th in the event with a time of 14:09.49, the best by the ACC field this season and strong enough to earn a regional qualifying mark.
Shane Ahlers, in his first ever 10,000 meter race, ran a 30:15.00. Ahlers, a transfer from Oregon earned NCAA All-Region honors in Cross Country for the Deacons during the 2004 season, and owned the team best 5,000 meter performance during the recently completed indoor season.
Chris Catton ran a 1:51.74 in the 800 meters. "He raced very well," said director of track and field Annie Bennett. "He's been training so hard and he really used all of his techniques today and ran a great race."
Erin Franklin ran a 35:37.73 in the 10,000 meter race, while Brian Smith finished the 5,000 meters in 15:14.13. Brad Wharton ran a 3:52.00 in the 1,500 meters.
The Deacons return to action on Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
