Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest women's golf team leads the 18 team field at the 33rd annual Lady Gator Invitational. The Deacons shot four strokes better than Duke, the nation's No.1-ranked team, for a 14 over par on the day. Seniors Ashley Hoagland and Christine Hallstrom lead the field, each with a first round 71.
Ashley Hoagland, who leads the Deacons in scoring average this season, found her best first round performance this year during opening day at the Lady Gator. Seventy-one marked the best opening round for Hallstrom as well. The two are tied for first place, followed closely by Duke's Liz Janangelo and Florida's Whitney Myers, both of whom shot a first round 72.
Maggie Simons, four over on the day, is tied for 10th place after an opening round 74. Mandy Goins, tied for 42nd, shot a 78 today, while lone Deacon freshman Laura Crawford fired an 83, good for an 84th place tie.
The Deacons, with a four stroke lead heading into day two of the three day tournament, have yet to capture a team title this season. Wake Forest finished fourth recently at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and fourth in the fall at the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Play resumes on the par 70, 5,773 yard University of Florida golf course in Gainesville on Saturday morning.
