The Universities of Georgia and Duke lead the pack after round one of the 2005 Bryan National Collegiate women's golf tournament. Both teams shot four under on day one, to take a six stroke lead to Saturday's shotgun 10:30 am round. Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo, the reigning Bryan Park champion, leads all individuals with her first round 67 (-5).
The Bulldogs and Blue Devils combined 284 first round stroke total marks the lowest first round team score in the history of the tournament. It is the lowest single round total by Georgia in the Bryan National in its five years of participating in the tournament.
Not since 2002 has an individual carded a 67 or better in the first round. Janangelo, the fourth-ranked golfer in the country, paces the Blue Devils, who brought only four participants to this year's event. Joining her in the top-10 finishes of the day are teammates Brittany Lang (tied for 2nd) and Jennifer Pandolfi (tied for 10th).
Georgia placed four girls in the top-20. Whitney Wade carded a 69 on round one, while Natalia Nicholls (70), Kelly Froelich (72) and Jackie Beers (73) brought the Bulldogs home a share of the lead after day one.
Tournament co-host Wake Forest finished Friday in ninth place. The Deacons, with the absence of senior Ashley Hoagland, shot a combined 303. Freshman Laura Crawford is the lone Deacon in the top-20. Her one over, 73 earned her a tie for 16th place. Christine Hallstrom offered a 76 (+4) and Mandy Goins and Maggie Simons each fired a first round 77 (+5).
Weather has again caused a change in format and tee times for Saturday morning. The shotgun formation will be used throughout the remainder of the weekend. The 17-team field tees off Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The third and final round is slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
