Deacons Take Youthful Lineup To Old North State
Wake Forest will be represented by a pair of freshmen, one sophomore and two juniors this week at the ACC Championships at the Old North State Golf Club.
While the Demon Deacons will be one of the younger teams in Uwharrie Point, they aren't without experience. Sean Moore won the individual title at the ACC's last spring as a freshman. Junior Kyle Reifers will play in his third ACC Championship and junior Doug Manchester in his second.
Freshman Webb Simpson leads Wake Forest in stroke average (72.15) and he has finished in the top 10 in three of his nine collegiate tournaments. Freshman Chris McCartin (74.69) has also played in nine events and has finished as high as eighth place.
Moore Set To Defend ACC Title
Last spring then-freshman Sean Moore became the first Wake Forest player to win ACC individual medalist honors since Tim Straub in 1989.
Moore shot a 70-67-68--205 (-11) to hold off Clemson's Jack Ferguson by one stroke.
With the victory, Moore joins an impressive list of Demon Deacons to win the ACC title: Straub (1989), Gary Hallberg (1980), Scott Hoch (1977 and 1978), Curtis Strange (1975), Bob Byman (1974), Jay Haas (1973), Jim Simons (1972), Kent Engelmeier (1970), Lanny Wadkins (1969), Jack Lewis (1968), Charles Snipes (1967), Johnny Harris (1966), Dennis Milne (1964), Jay Sigel (1963), Ken Folkes (1962), Ronny Thomas (1959 and 1960), John Gerring (1957) and Arnold Palmer (1954).
Deacons Have Finished Second At Last Two ACC Championships
In each of the past two years, Wake Forest has posted strong performances at the ACC Championships, finishing in second place in 2003 and in 2004.
The Demon Deacons have finished in the top four in each of the last five ACC Championships.
Wake Forest has won the ACC title 18 times with its last title coming in 1989. The Deacons have captured more ACC team titles and more individual titles (21) than any other team.
Coach Haas To Join Brother, Nephew At Wachovia Championship
Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas will join his brother, Jay Haas and nephew, Bill Haas, May 2-8 at the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. Jay Haas and son, Bill, both previously played at Wake Forest.
Deacons Take Momentum Into ACC Championships
Wake Forest, after finishing second last weekend at the Courtyard by Marriott Collegiate in Cary (NC), is feeling good heading into the ACC Championships.
The Deacons finished just one shot behind Duke at the rain-shortened 36-hole event at Devils Ridge Golf Club. There were 15 teams in the tournament.
Freshman Webb Simpson and junior Kyle Reifers finished tied for fourth in the individual race with 7-under 137s. Sophomore Sean Moore tied for 20th place with a 1-under 143 and junior Doug Manchester shot even par to tie for 25th place.
Wake Owns Lofty National Ranking
Wake Forest is ranked fifth in the most recent Golf World national ratings. The Demon Deacons are ranked 12th in the GCAA poll and 14th in Golf Week.
Individually, freshman Webb Simpson is ranked 22nd and junior Kyle Reifers 26th.
Simpson One Of The Nation's Top Freshmen
Wake Forest freshman Webb Simpson, who leads the team in stroke average, has been one of college golf's top freshmen this spring.
In nine collegiate tournaments, Simpson has finished 24th or higher in all but one. He has finished under par four times.
Simpson finished third in his first college tournament -- The Ridges. Three weeks ago, he took second place at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Collegiate. Last weekend he finished tied for fourth place at the Courtyard by Marriott Collegiate.
Simpson is ranked 22nd nationally in Division I golf by Golf Week.
