Tallahassee, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams finished the second day of competition at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference championship on Friday, despite a nearly three hour weather delay. Michael Bingham became the first Deacon in the men's program to win an individual title in three years and only the second Deacon decathlete to capture the title.
Brad Wharton and Brian Smith qualified for the 1500 meter finals on Saturday, with times of 3:54.73 and 3:53.27, respectively. It was a personal best for Smith in the event. Mike Loyd advanced to the finals in the 110 meter hurdles with his 14.57, seventh place finish on Saturday.

Michael Bingham won the 110 meter hurdles in the sixth event of the decathlon. His time of 14.66 was a personal best and earned him 891 points. He placed fifth in the discus, tied for third in the pole vault with a personal record 13-11.25, smashed a personal best in the javelin, throwing for 148-09.00 and taking a 101 point lead into the final event of the decathlon. The Burlington, N.C., native set a new personal record (4:51.02) and scored 613 points in the 1500 for a total of 7,162 (a new personal record) to edge North Carolina senior Rob Bates for the first Deacon men's individual title in the conference championship since 2002. His point total was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Mike Piscetelli finished ninth in the decathlon, helped by a third place finish in the discus throw. Ray Harbert ran a personal best (11.30) in the 100 meter race and a season best (23.30) in the 200 meter event. Willie Idlette also ran a season best in the 200 meters, finishing in 21.86.
