ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Freshman Brett Linnenkohl drilled a two-run home run, drove in four and scored three runs, while senior Ben Ingold added four hits to lead the Demon Deacons past Elon, 12-5, in non-conference baseball action from Latham Field Tuesday afternoon. Wake Forest has now captured five consecutive games and improves to 22-23, while the Phoenix drops to 28-23.

Senior Kip Byrum (3-1) picked up the victory in relief. The southpaw entered the game when senior Tim Morley was pulled without retiring a batter with some tightness in his pitching shoulder. Byurm worked 4.0 scorelss innings and allowed three hits. Byrum did walk five, but also struckout a pair.

Eight different Demon Deacons had hits and eight scored runs. Wake Forest pounded out 15 hits on the afternoon. Ingold went 4-for-6 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Sophomore Matt Antonelli went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, senior Ryder Mathias went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI, while senior J.B. Tucker went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Matt Miller went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

After loading the bases with no outs in the first inning and failing to score a run, the Demon Deacons plated five in the top of the second inning. Linnenkohl and Mathias each belted two-run home runs in the inning. The blast for Linnenkohl was the second of his career, while the homer was Mathias' seventh this season and 15th of his career. Mathias has now homered in three of the Deacs last four games.

Wake Forest pushed the lead to 9-0 with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth inning. Mathis added his third RBI of the game with run scoring single in the fourth. Antonelli then added an RBI single and Tucker drove in his 56th run of the season with his eighth sacrifice fly in the fifth. Tucker has now recorded an RBI in 11 consecutive games.

After the Phoenix drew within 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Deacs answered quickly with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning to regain a nine run advantage, 12-3. Linnenkohl drove in a pair with a two-run double. Linnenkohl fouled off five pitches in the at-bat before drilling the 3-2 pitch down the right-field line to plate junior Casey Sterk and Miller. Linnenkohl moved to third on Antonelli's infield singled, then raced home when the Elon shortstop's throw got away from the first basemen.

Elon added a couple more unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the scoring, 12-5.

Sophomore Josh Ellis, sophomore Charlie Mellies and junior Kyle Young worked the final 5.0 innings and allowed just one earned run. Ellis went 2.0 innings and surrendered just one earned run on one hit. Mellies struckout four and allowed two hits in 2.0 innings, while Young struckout one and yielded a hit in 1.0 inning.

Jesse Lewter (1-3) was charged with loss for Elon. The southpaw went 3.0 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits. Lewter struckout three and walked three.

Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Appalachian State. First-pitch at Red Lackey Field in Boone is scheduled for 3 p.m. Freshman Matt Hammond will get the start for the Demon Deacons. Live stats will be available at WakeForestSports.com via Gametracker.
