Winston-Salem, N.C. - Former Wake Forest tennis star Andrew Simpson has returned to his alma mater to be the assistant coach, Demon Deacons head coach Jeff Zinn announced on Thursday.
"We're ecstatic to welcome Andrew back to Wake Forest," Zinn said. "He brings a lot of enthusiasm to the team and he possesses a great love for Wake Forest. As a former Demon Deacon tennis player, our guys will respect his experience and expertise. He will be able to relate to our current players about what it takes to be successful both on and off the court."
"I am thrilled to be back at Wake Forest," Simpson said. "I had a great experience during my four years and am looking forward to passing on as much as I can to the guys on the team. I'd like to thank Wake Forest for giving me the opportunity to help my alma mater reach its goals of contending for ACC Championships and becoming a top-10 national program."
Since graduating in 2004, Simpson has been working for Team Connection in High Point, a company that outsources Reebok and adidas footwear and apparel.
Simpson, who played for Zinn from 2000-04, won 33 singles and 42 doubles matches in his four-year career with the Deacons. Simpson and his doubles partners posted eight wins against nationally-ranked doubles teams. He was a part of four NCAA Tournament squads, one of the most successful periods in the Wake Forest tennis program's history.
Simpson attended Broughton High School in Raleigh where he was tabbed as the two-time Raleigh News & Observer State Tennis Player of the Year, the Raleigh Sports Club Athlete of the Year and Wake County Tennis Player of the Year.
Simpson replaces Thomas Andersson who has returned to Little Rock, Ark., to establish a tennis academy for underprivileged youth.
