Kelly Dostal Named ACC Female Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest field hockey player Kelly Dostal has been named the 2004-05 recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference's Mary Garber Award. Presented annually to the top female student-athlete, Dostal becomes the first Wake Forest athlete since Bea Bielik in 2002 to receive the award and the second female overall.
North Carolina's Sean May received the ACC male athlete of the year.
The Mary Garber Award is named for the retired Winston-Salem Journal sportswriter, while the Anthony J. McKevlin Award is named for the former sports editor of The (Raleigh) News & Observer, is presented to the ACC's top male student-athlete.
In 2005, Dostal helped Wake Forest claim its third-straight NCAA Field Hockey Championship and was named the recipient of the prestigious Honda Award and the NFHCA National Field Hockey Player of the Year. She led the nation in points with 79, a new Wake Forest record. The Hatfield, Mass., native garnered first-team All-America recognition from NFHCA and WomensFieldHockey.com. Dostal led the ACC in goals (30), shots (173) and shots per game (7.52), garnering ACC Offensive Player of the Year and All-ACC accolades. A member of the US National Team, Dostal was chosen as Sports Illustrated On Campus' Fall Female Athlete of the Year. She finished her career as the Demon Deacons' all-time leader in points (204) and goals (84).
Dostal received 18 votes for the Garber Award, one vote ahead of Georgia Tech track and field performer Chaunte Howard, who tallied 17 votes. Virginia lacrosse player Amy Appelt recorded 13 votes followed by North Carolina gymnast Courtney Bumpers and Duke lacrosse player Katie Chrest, who each received six votes. Miami track and field performer Kimberli Barrett and Florida State basketball player Roneeka Hodges earned four votes apiece. Rounding out the voting was Maryland swimmer Chrissy Miller, who received two votes, Clemson track and field performer Gisele Oliveira and NC State basketball player Tiffany Stansbury who garnered one vote each.
May recorded 41 votes, ahead of Duke lacrosse player Matt Danowski who tallied 11 votes. Virginia football player Heath Miller received seven votes, Virginia Tech track and field performer Spyridon Jullien gathered four votes and NC State basketball player Julius Hodge earned three votes. Georgia Tech golfer Roberto Castro and Miami football player Antrel Rolle received two votes apiece, while Florida State track and field performer Walter Dix and Maryland soccer player Jason Garey tallied one vote each to round out voting for the McKevlin Award.
