Durham, N.C. -- - The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Duke, 4-1, in a preseason scrimmage Thursday morning in Durham, N.C. The last time these two teams met was at the NCAA Championship game, when the Demon Deacons defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, to claim their third consecutive national championship.
Playing three 25-minute periods, the Deacs dominated, finding the back of the cage twice in the first period. Freshman Christine Suggs, a two-time first team prep All-American from Durham, N.C., knocked one in and junior Haley Scott followed suit with one of her own. In the second period, Suggs again found the back of the cage. In the third, sophomore Chelsea Cipriani got the Deacs' final goal.
"I am very pleased with the way we played today," said head coach Jennifer Averill. "Both teams started a little bit sloppy, but as the game went on, we continued to improve. This is a great starting point for us and we look to progress and get stronger from here."
The three-time defending national champions will open their season in Iowa City, IA, at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on August 27 against Iowa at 1 p.m. (EST).
