Hanahan, S.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team completed the first day of competition at the Cougar Classic on Sunday. The Deacons fired a 36-hole total of 603, 27-over par (300-303), good for a seventh place tie.

Tennessee is in first place with a five-over par 581 total. Georgia (seven-over, 583) and Virginia (15-over, 591) round out the top-three. Vanderbilt, Auburn, and NC State each shot 16-over totals of 592. Wake Forest and LSU are tied for seventh at 603.

Junior Mandy Goins paced the Deacons with a two-round total of 145 (one-over par). The Frankfort, Ky., native shot a first round 69 to take the individual lead but followed that up with a four-over 76 in the second 18. Goins stands in a tie for seventh, just three shots back from the leader.

Junior Maggie Simons shot rounds of 78-73 for a seven-over par total of 151. She currently stands in a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Laura Crawford shot rounds of 75-78 good for a nine-over par 153. Sophomore Jordan Craig and freshman Nannette Hill each shot 12-over par 156. Craig fired a pair of 78s, while Hill bounced back with a 76 after opening with an 80.

Tennessee's Nicole Smith holds the 36-hole lead with a two-under par 142. Smith shot two rounds of 71 on the opening day. College of Charleston's Angie Hill, Georgia's Whitney Wade, and Virginia's Leah Wigger each stand a shot behind. Georgia's Taylor Leon and Virginia's Lauren Mielbrecht are two shots out of the lead.

The 54-hole event was scheduled to begin on Monday, but tournament officials chose to move the start up due to the threat of hurricane Ophelia. The tournament is being held at Yeamans Hall, par-72, 6,084 yards. The tournament will conclude Monday morning. Livestats can be found at www.golfstat.com.
