Winston-Salem, N.C. - Junior Kristi Harshman scored a pair of goals, leading the Wake Forest field hockey to a 4-2 victory over Indiana in the home opener, Sunday afternoon in Kentner Stadium. The win improves the Demon Deacons to 3-0 on the season and increases their non-conference winning streak to 55.
Junior Jamie Whitten scored her first career goal, scoring off a corner in the second half, while Haley Scott added the game winner. Freshman Christine Suggs and junior Lauren Crandall both had a pair of assists.
Harshman scored her first of the day at the 10:39 mark, off a penalty corner that originated as a shot from Crandall. Four minutes later, Harshman scored an identical goal, with the assist again coming from Crandall.
Regaining the possession just two minutes after the second goal, Suggs broke away from the Hoosier defense and took the ball into the corner of the circle, where she crossed it to Scott, who was waiting alone in the center. Knocking the ball past the Indiana keeper, Scott put Wake Forest ahead by three going into the half.
Indiana came out fighting after the break, scoring back-to-back goals. Lesley Wiler snuck the ball behind Wake Forest goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi during a small rumble in the circle at the 39:42 mark and then Morgan Miller netted one off a corner at the 48:48 mark.
Not satisfied with just a one goal difference, the Deacs increased their lead to two off a penalty corner with about 10 minutes remaining. After the initial shot by Suggs, Whitten was able to finish it off, scoring her first collegiate goal.
Gagliardi closed the day with two saves off six shots, while Indiana's Haley Exner finished with 11 saves off Wake's 20 shots. On the day, the Deacs took 10 penalty corners to Indiana's three. The win also marks head coach Jennifer Averill's 199th career victory.
The Demon Deacons will next face the 2003 and 2004 NCAA runner-ups, Duke, Saturday, Sept. 10 in Durham, N.C. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
