Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team will face Duke University in the first ACC field hockey contest of the year Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.C. The last meeting between the two teams was in the NCAA Championship game where the Demon Deacons defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, for their third consecutive national championship.
Both Wake Forest and Duke enter the match with perfect records. The Demon Deacons bring a trio of victories over Big Ten opponents, including a 4-2 win over Indiana this past weekend. Duke, which defeated Ohio State and Delaware in the its last outings, enters the game with a 4-0 record.
The rivalry between the Deacs and the Blue Devils is one of the oldest and longest in the program's history. Dating back 31 years, the two teams have faced each other a record 57 times. In the beginning of the series, the Blue Devils took the first 24 of 25 contests. It wasn't until the 1995 season that Wake Forest took more than one game in a row. Since the 1995 season, the Deacs have won 15 of 25, including an eight-game winning streak from 2000-03.
