Winston-Salem, N.C. -- Clemson's Julie Talley hit a three pointer to give the Tigers the lead with 2:23 remaining and the Wake Forest women's basketball team was unable to recover, as the Demon Deacons fell to the Tigers, 75-68, Sunday afternoon in Littlejohn Coliseum.
Wake Forest had battled back from a nine point halftime deficit and led for the majority of the second half, thanks in part to freshman Deirdre Naughton who scored 16 of her 18 points in the second stanza. On the day, Naughton also had seven rebounds, while senior Cotelia Bond-Young lit up the floor, leading all scorers with 25 points. Bond-Young also added the team-high seven assists and four steals.
The Deacs came out of the break trailing by six and knotted the score with 11 minutes remaining. Taking the lead after Naughton sunk three trey's in a span of two minutes, the Deacs were shocked by a 12-1 Clemson run that switched the control of the game. After Talley hit the three with just over two minutes remaining, the Tigers went on to sink all eight of their free throws to finish the game.
Bond-Young opened the game strong for the Deacs, sinking six quick points. Clemson answered back and scored eight unanswered and captured the lead. Attempting to regain control, the Deacs brought it within a bucket with the help of 11 offensive rebounds and six steals, but 25.7 percent shooting from the field hurt the Deacs and the Tigers entered the break with a nine point advantage.
Freshman Alex Tchangoue led the Deacs off the boards with nine rebounds and was just one board away from double-double by adding 11 points. She also had four assists and two steals.
For the Tigers, four players scored in double figures, including Maxienne White with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tasha Phillips added 18, while Talley added 10.
On the day, the Demon Deacons led the Tigers off the boards, pulling down a total of 44 to Clemson's 39. Wake Forest also had 11 steals to Clemson's seven, but it was 42.4 percent shooting by the Tigers that helped give them the advantage. Wake Forest closed the day shooting 34.8 percent.
Wake Forest returns to Joel Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 19 to host Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
