WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest rallied back from an opening-game loss for the second straight night to notch a four-game win over Boston College in ACC action Saturday evening at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Demon Deacons, who have won six of their last seven matches, downed the Eagles 28-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-25.
Wake improves to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in the ACC with the victory. BC drops to 6-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Senior libero Natasha Schaefer set a milestone in the match, moving into sole possession of second place on Wake Forest's all-time career digs list. Schaefer was six digs behind Katie Horne (1996-99) entering the match. She tied Horne with six digs in the first game and then passed her with a pair in the second.
Schaefer, who already holds the rally-scoring era (2001-present) record for career digs, now has 1,194 digs in her three-and-a-half years as a Demon Deacon. The all-time program record is seemingly out of Schaefer's reach, however, as Trina Maso de Moya tallied 2,010 digs from 1998-2001.
Junior Jackie Lucas followed her career night on Friday with another stellar performance. Lucas, who set a new personal-best with 18 kills against Maryland, led Wake Forest with 16 kills. She hit .583 for the match, committing just two attacking errors in 24 attempts.
Sophomores Jessica Furlong and Natalie Mullikin were not far behind Lucas in kills, posting 15 and 13 respectively.
Mullikin and Lucas led Wake in blocking for the night. Mullikin had eight total blocks, including two block solos and six block assists. Lucas added a pair of block solos and three block assists for five total.
Freshman setter Dylan Faulkner recorder her sixth double-double of the season with 53 assists and 11 digs. Faulkner also had the Deacs' only two service aces in the contest.
Schaefer led the team with 15 digs on the night. Furlong chipped in eight digs, while senior Jenna Doane added seven.
In game one, Boston College pulled out a close 30-28 win, despite allowing the Demon Deacon attackers to hit .441 (18 kills, three errors, 34 attempts) in the contest.
With the score tied 15-15 midway through the game, the Eagles used a 10-6 run to take control. BC hung on for the victory, never allowing Wake to get closer than a two-point margin.
The Deacs responded to the opening-game loss by utilizing a late rally to earn a 30-24 game two victory. After Boston College tied the match up at 23-23, Wake out-scored the visitors 7-1 the rest of the way.
In game three, Wake Forest again had to rally late for the win, but this time the Deacs had to overcome more than the Eagle attack. With BC leading 21-20 and Wake Forest serving, the match was delayed for 20 minutes due to a fire alarm. The building was evacuated, but it proved to be a false alarm.
When play resumed, BC took a 24-21 advantage before Wake called a timeout. The Deacons then scored six unanswered points to take a 27-24 lead of their own. Wake held on for the 30-26 victory.
Except for an early 1-0 deficit, Wake Forest never trailed in game four. The Demon Deacons went on a 9-4 run to break a 15-15 tie. BC would not get closer than three the rest of the game, as Wake earned a 30-25 victory.
Coming into its weekend doubleheader with Maryland and Boston College, Wake Forest was 0-4 when losing the first game of a match. The Deacs bucked that trend this weekend, getting comeback wins in both matches.
The win was Wake Forest's third straight over Boston College. The Deacons had swept the Eagles in the two previous meetings, both of which came last fall.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend when it hits the road to face Florida State and Miami. The Demon Deacons will take on the Seminoles Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. and the Hurricanes Sunday, Oct. 22, at 12 p.m.
