Richmond, Va. - The 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team saw its season-opening five-match winning streak came to a conclusion Friday as 34th-ranked VCU handed the Deacons a 4-2 defeat in Richmond.

The Deacons lost the doubles point for the first time this season which proved to be a bad omen for Wake Forest. At number one singles, junior Todd Paul, the nation's 11th-ranked player, edged 52nd-ranked Arnaud Lecloerec in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Wake Forest earned another victory at number three singles where Andrew Hamar defeated Francesc Lleal, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was the third time this season Hamar defeated the Spaniard.

VCU won straight set matches at numbers four and five singles, giving both Mariusz Adamski and Cory Parr their first losses of the spring season. Brett Ross, playing number two singles, was upset by Petr Olsak in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Joe Bates' match at number six was suspended once the Rams sealed the team victory.

The Deacons were enjoying their longest winning streak since last February when Wake Forest started the season 7-0, including a victory against VCU.

There will be limited time for reflection for the Deacons who turn around Saturday at noon to face 35th-ranked Minnesota.
