Wake Forest, ranked 11th nationally and coming off a successful fall season, kicks off the 2006 campaign Saturday and Sunday at the Florida Gator Invitational in Gainesville, FL.
Seven teams ranked in the GCAA/Bridgestone top 25 will be among the 15 teams participating in the 54-hole event this weekend. The teams will play 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday at the par 70, 6,701-yard University of Florida Golf Course.
The host Florida Gators, the highest-ranked team in the event at fifth, pace the strong field. Other ranked teams participating this weekend include 8-Tennessee, 12-South Carolina, 16-Kentucky, 17-Georgia State and 20-Alabama.
Wake Forest, the only ACC team in the tournament, features two of the nation's top golfers - sophomore Webb Simpson (ranked 23rd individually by GolfWeek) and senior Kyle Reifers (ranked 39th). Also representing the Deacons this weekend will be junior Sean Moore, the 2005 North/South Amateur champion, and sophomores Chris McCartin and Chad Wilcox.
