Athens, Ga. - The Wake Forest women's golf team opened up the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in first place by firing a 10-over par 298. The Demon Deacons were the lone team to fire a sub-300 round on Friday and lead host school Georgia by three shots. The 54-hole event is being contested at University of Georgia Golf Course where the par is 72.
Freshman Nannette Hill led the way for the Deacons carding an even par round of 72. Hill stands in second place behind UGA's Jackie Beers who shot a three-under par 69.
Juniors Maggie Simons and Mandy Goins each added three-over par 75 for Wake Forest and the two are tied for sixth place.
Freshman Jean Chua added a four-over par 76 and sophomore Laura Crawford rounded out the Deacons with a five-over par 77.
"We managed to keep the high scores away, and in tough conditions like these, that's what you need to play well," Wake Forest coach Dianne Dailey said. "However, we realize that there are two more days left, and this is a talented field. So we have a lot of hard work and focus left."
