Track and Field Finishes Wake Forest Open

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams finished the Wake Forest Open, the first of two meets the school will host, on Saturday. The Deacons will also host the ACC Outdoor Championships in April.
On the women's side, freshman Johanna Hawkins placed second in the 100 meter dash running a time of 12.43 seconds. Hawkins just edged out teammate Ashley Spooner in the second heat. Spooner ran a time of 12.54 seconds and placed fourth overall in the event. The sophomore also placed ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.87 seconds.
Wake Forest dominated the 1500 meter run placing five runners in the top eight spots. Junior Michelle Sikes took the top spot with a time of 4:31.50. Caitlin Chrisman finished third with a time of 4:38.63. Allie Kieffer came in fourth running a time of 4:41.52. Adele Mitchell placed seventh with a time of 5:00.24, and sophomore Carter Ellis, running in her first career 1500, won her heat and placed eighth overall with a time of 5:05.90.
In the 400 meter dash, Brittany White ran a time of 59.90 seconds. Senior Ariel Meyers ran a time of 2:22.23 in the 800 meter run, placing fourth. Jamie Sobolewski finished one spot behind Meyers with a time of 2:25.52. In the 3000 meter run, Merry Placer placed second with a time of 10:19.06.
Catherine Muehleib placed second in the discus throw with a distance of 43.60 meters. Freshman Carly Mauch placed third in the javelin.
The Demon Deacon 4x100 team completed the race in 48.48 seconds, beating second place Winston-Salem State by over 1.5 seconds. In the 4x400 meter relay, Wake took home second place and the late entry `B' team captured fourth with Ellis running a fast final leg.
In the men's 100 meter dash, the Deacons claimed the top three spots with Michael Bingham edging out Kerry Major for first by one hundredths of a second. Bingham ran a time of 10.55 seconds to Major's 10.56 seconds. Senior Mike Loyd placed third in the event with a time of 10.67 seconds. Kevin Marion added a sixth place showing for the Deacs with a time of 10.88 seconds.
In the 200 meter dash, Eric Seely placed first with a time of 21.41 seconds, and Willie Idlette placed second with a time of 21.61 seconds. Seely and Idlette repeated their one-two showings in the 400 meter dash with times of 47.80 and 48.20 seconds respectively.
In the 800 meter run, Brad Wharton took the title with a time of 1:54.40 seconds. Senior Sean Stevens placed second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:57.97.
Mike Loyd took first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.44 seconds. In the 400 meter hurdles, Michael Bingham placed second with a time of 53.20 seconds, and Phillip Warsaw placed third with a time of 54.50 seconds.
The 4x100 team of Kerry Major, Willie Idlette, Kevin Marion and Mike Loyd won the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 41.68 seconds, almost a full second over second place WSSU.
On the throws field, freshman Boomer Peterson won the men's shot put with a distance of 14.33 meters, while Adam Gabrault took the hammer throw with a toss of 52.56 meters.
