Blacksburg, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team used a couple of impressive rallies to walk away with a 5-2 win at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon. The Deacons improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Hokies slide to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in the league.
After splitting the doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, the crucial point came down to No. 2 where Mariusz Adamski and Cory Parr trailed 7-6. The pair held serve to even the score, then broke Virginia Tech's serve before closing out the match.
Wake Forest is now 10-0 when winning the doubles point.
In singles, the Hokies earned victories at the top of the lineup as 15th-ranked Todd Paul and 69th-ranked Andrew Hamar were both upset in straight sets.
But the rest of the Wake Forest lineup picked up the slack. Parr and Charles Sartor won their matches in straight sets to give Wake Forest a 3-2 lead. With Virginia Tech up a set at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, Wake Forest needed either Adamski or Brett Ross to mount a rally. Both did.
Ross came back to beat Nicolas Delgado, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to seal the match. Moments later, Adamski completed a three-set marathon, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
The victory keeps Wake Forest near the top of the ACC standings. The Deacons join Florida State and Miami as teams with only one loss in the ACC. Virginia and Duke are undefeated in the league.
Wake Forest returns home to play six matches in 11 days at Leighton Tennis Stadium, beginning with Brown on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. Next weekend, the Deacons host a pair of ACC rivals as Maryland and Boston College come to town.
