#2 Waves Crash Past Deacons, 6-1

Malibu, Calif. - Second-ranked Pepperdine issued Wake Forest a 6-1 defeat on Wednesday in Malibu, Calif., at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves improved to 16-1 on the season, while the Demon Deacons slipped to 7-4.
The Deacons were sitting pretty in doubles leading at No. 1 and No. 3. Wake Forest's number three team of Brett Ross and Charles Sartor won, 8-5. But at the top spot, Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico of Pepperdine fought back against Todd Paul and Andrew Hamar from a 6-3 deficit to force, and win, a tiebreaker, 9-8 (6). That left the doubles point to be decided at No. 2 where Mariusz Adamski and Cory Parr were in a tiebreaker with the nation's fourth-ranked doubles team. Pepperdine prevailed by an identical 9-8 (6) score.
The Waves have lost the doubles point only once in the past two seasons.
In singles, Pepperdine rolled. 17th-ranked Scott Doerner cruised past 10th-ranked Todd Paul, 6-3, 6-0, at number one. Moments later, the Waves claimed victories at number six where Omar Altmann defeated Charles Sartor, 6-2, 6-2. At number four, senior Brett Ross earned Wake Forest's only point of the match, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Richard Johnson.
Pepperdine sealed the team victory at number two singles where 20th-ranked Pedro Rico knocked off Andrew Hamar, 6-2, 7-5. After the team result was already decided, Cory Parr and Mariusz Adamski lost their matches at No. 3 and No. 5.
The rugged stretch of the schedule continues next week as the Deacons get into ACC play. Next Tuesday, 25th-ranked NC State comes to Leighton Tennis Stadium. The first serve is at 3:00 p.m.
