Deacons Travel To ACC Championships As No. 6 Seed
Wake Forest (14-9, 6-5 ACC) enters the 2006 ACC Championships as the sixth-seeded team. The Demon Deacons will face 11th-seed Maryland on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
The winner of that match advances to play third-seeded Miami on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Earlier this year in Winston-Salem, Wake Forest defeated Maryland, 5-2. The Deacons and Terrapins have met only once in the history of this event, a Wake Forest victory way back in 1988.
The Deacons have advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Championships each of the last five years. Wake Forest will have to earn two victories this week in Cary to keep that streak alive.
The Deacons have never reached the finals of the ACC Championship.
Wake Forest Looks To Regain Momentum In Postseason
Ranked as high as 13th earlier this season, the Deacons enter the ACC Championship ranked 27th nationally, their low water mark of the year.
The Deacons have lost three in a row and four of their last five matches since April 5. The last three weeks have seen Wake Forest drop home matches to Duke and Georgia Tech and suffer road defeats at Florida State and Miami.
Wake Forest is looking to avoid its first four-match losing streak since the 2000 season.
Todd Paul: All-America Candidate
Ranked 17th nationally in singles, junior Todd Paul has posted a 25-11 record this season, playing against some of college tennis' best talent.
In the fall, he won the back draw of the All-American Championships, defeating the 39th, 59th, 62nd and 33rd ranked players over the course of four days.
This spring, Paul has defeated eight nationally-ranked opponents including seventh-ranked Raian Luchici of North Carolina and 16th-ranked Arnaud Lecloerec of VCU.
Paul is looking to become Wake Forest's second-ever singles All-American following Gilles Ameline in 1990.
This week, he was named All-ACC for the third time in his career. He joins Derrick Spice as the only players in Wake Forest history to accomplish that feat.
Brett Ross: Chasing History
Senior Brett Ross, a native of Roswell, Ga., will leave Wake Forest as won of the most successful players in school history. Ross enters the ACC Championships with 96 career singles victories, good for fourth all-time.
His 87 doubles victories are third in school history, just one behind Raul Munoz and four behind Wake Forest's career leader, Trent Brendon.
Ross and Charles Sartor have been dominant in doubles, going 13-1 since joining forces for the first time on February 27.
