Rock Hill, SC - Winthrop pitchers Alex Wilson and Jason Franzblau combined for a one-hit shutout to beat 19th-ranked Wake Forest 5-0 on Wednesday night in Rock Hill.
With the loss, the Deacons slip to 23-9 while 23rd-ranked Winthrop improves to 24-8.
Wilson, the Eagles' best pitcher and typical Friday starter, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Allan Dykstra singled. The Wake Forest freshman slugger extended his hitting streak to seven games, but it was the lone offensive highlight for the Deacons.
Wilson pitched seven innings, struck out nine and walked three. He struck out four straight Deacon hitters in the fourth and fifth innings. Wilson improved his record to 7-1, including wins against Alabama and Miami.
Franzblau pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to shut the door.
Deacon freshman starter Tyler Smith was charged with the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year. He threw a season-high four innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Smith struck out two and walked two.
Senior Kyle Young made his 75th career appearance to move into sixth place in the Wake Forest record books in that category. Young fired two perfect innings to keep the Deacons within striking distance.
The Eagles benefited from some timely hitting, scoring three of their five runs with two outs.
The Deacons were shut out for the second time this season. North Carolina turned the trick in mid-March at Hooks Stadium.
Coupled with Tuesday's loss, the Deacons have dropped back-to-back games for the first time since the UNC series.
The Deacons look to get back on track during a key ACC series this weekend in Raleigh against NC State. On Friday night at Doak Field, Wake Forest will send freshman Brad Kledzik (4-2, 2.43 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by sophomore Andrew Brackman (1-2, 6.46 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
