SKILLMAN, N.J. - Wake Forest junior Todd Paul has been selected to the prestigious USA Tennis Collegiate Team, administered by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Paul was chosen for the team as one of the top six American men in the college ranks.
Paul and his teammates will play at several USTA Futures events around the nation over the summer with the opportunity to improve their ATP world ranking. The schedule has not been determined.
The USA Tennis Collegiate Team is an elite training program funded by the USTA for the top American collegiate tennis players that began in 1996. The program is designed to provide players with exposure to the USTA professional circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months.
Paul will be joined by Stanford's Matt Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.), Texas' Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.), Georgia's John Isner (Greensboro, N.C.), Ohio State's Bryan Koniecko (Long Island, N.Y.) and Notre Dame's Sheeva Parbhu (Omaha, Neb.).
Paul, a native of Stamford, Conn., finished his junior season with a 27-14 record. He reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships. Paul was ranked between 10th and 20th all spring. He peaked at number 10 on March 7 while on a season-long six-match winning streak.
Twenty of Paul's 41 matches this season came against players who qualified for the NCAA Singles field. In meetings against the invited 64 players, Paul registered an 9-11 mark. Six of those losses, however, came against opponents ranked in the top 10. His landmark win this season came against 10th-ranked Raian Luchici of North Carolina in March.
Paul, along with former Deacon Derrick Spice, is one of two players in Wake Forest history to be selected to the All-ACC team three straight years. Paul was also the 2004 ACC Rookie of the Year.
Past USA Tennis Collegiate Team members include current professionals James Blake, Bob and Mike Bryan, former Wake Forest national champion Bea Bielik, Ansley Cargill, Amer Delic, Laura Granville, Marissa Irvin, Alex Kim, Kelly McCain, Jeff Morrison and Brian Vahaly.
