Wake Forest's men's golf team fired the low team round of the day and rallied from seventh place to a third place finish on Tuesday at the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
Wake Forest's 274 was nine strokes better than any of the other 14 teams in the field. It allowed the Deacons to finish with a 54-hole total of 15-under 849 and tie for third with Chattanooga. Penn State won the tournament with a 19-under 845. Wisconsin finished second at 16-under 848.
Tuesday's rally was fueled by freshman Chris Cannon's seven-under 65 which tied for the low round in the field for the tournament. Cannon led the Deacs with a five-under 211 to tie for fourth individually.
Webb Simpson, playing in his first tournament of the fall season, finished tied for ninth with a three-under 213. Simpson shot an even par 72 on Tuesday.
Dustin Groves was the lone Wake Forest golfer to card a pair of rounds in the 60s. Groves shot a 67 on Tuesday and finished at two-under 214 to finish tied for 13th.
Brendan Gielow carded a one-under 71 on Tuesday. He finished the tournament at three-over 219 and tied for 34th.
Chris McCartin shot his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a one-under 71 to finish at four-over 220. McCartin was tied for 41st overall among individuals.
Tuesday's 274 is the low round of the season for Wake Forest as a team. It is also the lowest team round since the Deacons shot a 271 in the first round of the NCAA East Regional in 2005.
Wake Forest's next tournament will be at the Bank of Tennessee The Ridges on Oct. 12-14 in Johnson City, Tenn.
