EARLYSVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest's Nicole Schappert came within two seconds of earning All-ACC honors, leading the Demon Deacons to a seventh-place finish at the 2007 ACC Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at Panorama Farms.
Schappert placed 15th individually, just out of the top 14 for All-ACC. The junior from Delray Beach, Fla. ran a 21:41.9. Schappert's time was 1.6 seconds off NC State's Angelina Blackmon for 14th.
As a team, Wake Forest finished with 127 points, four shy of Duke for sixth place. The Deacons were also just nine points out of third place and 25 points out of second.
"I hate that we were on the bottom end of the standings, but we were only nine points out of third and 25 out of second, so I couldn't ask for anything more," said head coach Annie Bennett. "We ran the youngest team out there. We ran five freshmen, and they did a lot for us. I was very pleased with our team effort. We're moving in the right direction. We showed a lot of courage out there."
Senior Caitlin Chrisman was the second Deacon across the line, running a 22:05.6 to place 21st.
Freshmen Chelsea Bolton and Marley Burns were Wake's third and fourth runners. Bolton ran a 22:14.6 to place 26th. Burns was not far behind in 28th with a 22:16.7.
Junior Merry Placer rounded out the Deacons top five, finishing 37th in 22:37.2.
Freshman Cate Berenato took 65th in a time of 23:42.7.
Freshmen Whitney Curry and Jessica Barton were seventh and eighth for the Deacons. Curry placed 75th in 24:09.3, while Barton was 77th in 24:23.6.
Florida State's Susan Kuijken won the individual title out of 91 total runners Kuijken finished in a time of 20:23.5.
The Seminoles also won the team title in a rout. FSU scored 64 points, easily eclipsing second-place NC State with 102. Boston College, North Carolina and Virginia rounded out the top five.
This marks the first season since 2002 that Wake Forest has not had a women's All-ACC competitor.
The Deacons will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Southeast Regionals in Louisville, Ky. Wake will be looking to qualify for its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
