Deacon Golfers Move Up at UNCG Bridgestone

The Wake Forest men's golf team shot a final round 286 on Tuesday and moved up two places to finish eighth at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, NC.
Louisville closed with a 279 to hold off Mississippi State which turned in a tournament record 277 in the final round. Louisville finished with a 54-hole team total of 860, three shots ahead of the Bulldogs. Louisville's 860 was also a tournament record. Central Florida finished third at 866 while North Carolina was fourth at 870.
Louisville's Derek Fathauer took medalist honors with a tournament record 10-under 206. Kent State's Brett Cairns was second at five-under while Greg Forest of UCF was third at four-under.
The Deacons, ranked 11th in the nation, finished with a team score of 13-over 877. On Tuesday, Wake had the fifth-lowest team score of the day at two-under 286. Brendan Gielow led the Deacons with a one-under 71 on Tuesday. He finished at even par 216 and finished tied for 11th in the field.
Chris McCartin fired a 73 on Tuesday to finish at five-over 221. McCartin was tied for 29th.
Junior Dustin Groves finished tied for 35th after a closing one-under 71 on Tuesday. He ended the tournament at six-over 222.
Sophomore Travis Wadkins carded his best round of the tournament with a one-under 71 on Tuesday to finish at seven-over 223. Wadkins was tied for 40th in the field of 79 golfers.
Freshman Chris Cannon was at three-over 75 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 10-over 226.
The Deacons will return to action on Feb. 9 when they travel to play in the University of Florida Tournament. For complete results, click here.
