Demon Deacon Crush Cougars 70-39

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team opened Wednesday morning's game against the College of Charleston with a 17-0 run and didn't look back, ending the contest with 70-39 victory at the Joel Coliseum.
The win was critical for the Demon Deacons (10-2) who suffered a tough home loss on Sunday to Radford (52-44).
"Today was very important for us," senior Christen Brown said. "We needed to get back on track. We want people to know we're a whole different team this year and we don't want to be taken lightly."
Brown put up 13 points for the Demon Deacons, just one point shy of her career high 14, set during the 2004-05 season. Junior Corinne Groves was the leading Wake Forest scorer, with 14 points and seven boards.
The Cougars were led by junior Sarah Moye, who picked up 11 points off the bench. The loss set the team to 4-6 for the year and ended the 3-game College of Charleston win-streak.

"It was so exciting to see them walk in," Brown said. "It was a fun crowd to play for."
Freshman Camiller Collier had her first career start during the game, stepping in for Tiffany Roulhac, who suffered a mild concussion during the team's last outing. Collier played had a career-high five assists in the contest.
"Camille did a great job of stepping into a starting role. She played very well today," Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen said.
In her third game of the season, junior guard Yolanda Lavender set a career high eight assists, topping her previous mark of six, set vs. Richmond on December 3, 2006. The Washington, D.C. native played 21 minutes during Wednesday's game. Wake Forest opened the contest with a 17-0 run, holding the Cougars to just five shots through the first seven minutes. The Demon Deacons took advantage of 13 first half turnovers by Charleston, scoring 15 of 39 points from Cougar fumbles.
Jill Furstenburg opened the second half for the Cougars with a 3-point basket and C of C's Sarah Moye and Ashley Scott followed with jumpers to whittle the Demon Deacon lead to 18 at the 16:05 mark (42-24).
Both teams lost control on the court over the following two minutes, as Wake Forest went 0-5, Chraleston shot 0-3 and each squad committed two turnovers. Camille Collier and Yolanda Lavender forced two possession changes for Charleston, but neither athlete was able to come up with a basket to finish the play.
Lavender ended the scoreless streak with 13:52 remaining, landing a second-chance basket from a missed shot by Groves, to set the score at 44-24.
With 12:03 to play, Groves' bucket sent the Deacons on a 16-0 run. Sophomore Courteney Morris forced two of the three Cougar turnovers during their scoreless streak and a pair of free throws by Jessie Cain gave the Deacs a 36-point advantage with a little over seven minutes in regulation.
Cain had the final basket of the night with 20 seconds on the clock, setting the final score at 70-39. The result marks the team's second highest offensive campaign and best defensive performance of 2007.
The Demon Deacons will return to the Joel on Friday to host local rival Winston-Salem State (0-8) at 7 p.m.
