KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
Faced with blustery conditions, the No. 20 Wake Forest women's tennis team used a complete team effort to dispatch No. 23 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-2. Heading into conference play, the Deacs improved their record to 5-1 on the season with the victory.
"I'm very happy with the outcome today, especially considering the wind," head coach Chad Skorupka said after the match. "I thought everyone played well. It was a true team win."
Wake led off the afternoon by getting the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Leading off for the Deacs, the sophomore tandem of Christian Tara and Ana Jerman defeated the Vols' Blakeley Griffith and Zsofia Zubor, 8-4. Wake took the doubles point when the team of junior Alexandra Hirsch and sophomore Sierra Poske defeated Connor Vogel and Ghizela Schutte, 8-5. Senior Ashlee Davis and freshman Sasha Kulikova then fell to Samantha Orlin and Caitlin Whoriskey, 8-4.
Wake proceeded to go on a tear through singles play to win the match. Ranked No. 21 in the country, Griffith defeated Hirsch 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, but Jerman defeated Orlin (6-1, 6-3) at No. 5 to get the point back.
No. 97 Davis proved victorious in a hard-fought match with Schutte at the No. 2 position to get Wake's third point. With the match-clenching point on the line, Kulikova defeated Tennessee's Vicky Jones at No. 6 (7-5, 6-0) to give the Deacs their fifth win of the spring season.
With the match already won, Poske defeated Whoriskey at No. 4 (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) while No. 100 Tara fell to Vogel (5-7, 7-6, 0-1).
The Deacs return home to open up the ACC schedule on Thursday, March 1. Weather permitting, Wake's match with North Carolina will take place at Leighton Stadium at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to attend and enjoy free pizza at the conclusion of the doubles point.
