WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest junior Webb Simpson beat sophomore teammate Dustin Groves 2-up in a birdie-filled match Wednesday to win the annual Demon Deacon intrasquad match play title at Old Town Golf Club.
Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas started the intrasquad competition in 2001. This year's event came at a perfect time, during Wake's nearly one month layoff between tournaments.
Wednesday's championship match was a slugfest between two of the ACC's top performers. Simpson emerged with his second straight title, but only after both golfers combined for 12 birdies.
Although the unofficial tournament is just six years old, Simpson joins an impressive list of previous winners. Bill Haas won the event in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Kyle Reifers took the crown in 2004. Haas and Reifers are both currently playing on the PGA Tour.
Simpson won last year's event as a sophomore.
Wake Forest gets back into action as a team next week (March 9-11) at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas. The Deacons are proven contenders for the ACC championship this spring. In six tournaments this season, Wake has finished in the top five three times.
Simpson (72.17), Groves (72.67), junior Chris McCartin (72.89) and freshman Brendan Gielow (72.93), give Wake Forest, remarkably, four players with a stroke average of under 73.
