TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
The Wake Forest baseball team fell to fourth-ranked Florida State on Sunday, 11-1, getting swept by the Seminoles in the process. With the loss, the Deacons fall to 11-10 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, while FSU remains undefeated at 23-0 (3-0).
The Deacs took their first lead of the series in the first, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage on a Willy Fox single. Two straight walks from FSU starter Ryan Strauss put sophomore Allan Dykstra and junior Eric Williams on first and second, setting the stage for Fox's RBI hit up the middle to score Williams.
After Dustin Hood reached on a fielder's choice and Fox made the force out at second, Strauss walked sophomore Evan Ocheltree to load the bases for junior Austin Jones. Jones struck out swinging, however, to end the inning.
Fox's single extended his hitting streak to 10 games, Wake's longest of the season.
The Deacs' lead did not last for long. Leading off for the Seminoles in the first, Tony Thomas took the first pitch he saw from sophomore Garrett Bullock over the right field fence to tie the game at one.
Wake loaded the bases again in the third but was unable to retake the lead.
Junior Ben Hunter came on in relief after Bullock got into some trouble in the sixth. With runners on first and second, Dennis Guinn doubled to center field off of Bullock, scoring both Seminoles to take the 3-1 lead. Guinn took third on a fielding error from Williams. After an RBI single from Jason Stidham to score Guinn, Hunter came on and got D'Vontrey Richardson to ground into the inning-ending double play.
Bullock (1-1, 5.54 ERA) ended his outing after 5 1/3, giving up seven hits, four runs (all earned) while striking out a season-high five batters in the loss.
FSU added a fifth run in the seventh to go up 5-1. The Seminoles pulled away in the eighth, scoring six runs to push the score to 11-1. Senior Josh Ellis gave up his first six runs of the year in the process, only one of them earned.
The Deacs have left 56 runners stranded during their current five-game losing skid.
Wake will take the field again on Tuesday, March 20, against Ohio at Hooks Stadium before travelling to Winthrop on Wednesday. NC State will be the Deacs' next ACC opponent when the Wolfpack travel to Winston-Salem on March 23-25.
