Wake Forest Drops Series Finale Against No. 3 Georgia Tech

Sophomore starting pitcher Cameron Bagwell recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Sophomore starting pitcher Cameron Bagwell produced a solid outing on the mound as he set new career highs in both strikeouts and pitches thrown. The Pineville, N.C., native recorded 10 punchouts while tossing 107 pitches over the course of 5.2 innings.
Junior first baseman Kade Lewis continued his hot streak as he launched a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the third. Lewis finished the series going 6-for-13 from the plate with four home runs, nine RBIs and four runs scored.
Sophomore right fielder Luke Costello added his team-leading 15th home run of the season as he lasered a solo shot to right field to give the Demon Deacons a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, junior left fielder Boston Torres blasted a solo home run to lead off the fourth for his second long ball of the season.
The Demon Deacons have seen the ball leave the yard at a staggering rate over the last eight games, hitting 33 home runs in that span, including 10 over the three games against the Yellow Jackets. Overall, the Deacs have tallied 75 home runs this season.
Elsewhere, freshman shortstop JD Stein notched his 10th multi-hit game of the season, finishing the afternoon going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Demon Deacons struck first in the opening frame as junior Javar Williams scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of junior first baseman Kade Lewis.
- The Yellow Jackets plated two runs in the bottom of the first.
- Starting pitcher Cameron Bagwell bounced back as he fanned three batters during a scoreless second inning.
- Lewis crushed a solo home run with two outs to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third.
- This marked the Sartell, Minn., native's 12th home run of the season and his fourth home run of the series.
- Georgia Tech reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
- Junior left fielder Boston Torres cut the deficit to one as he rocketed a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning.
- The Deacs tied the game later in the inning as junior Blake Schaaf came across to score on a sacrifice fly by Williams.
- Bagwell struck out the side to keep the game tied through four innings.
- Sophomore right fielder Luke Costello gave the Demon Deacons a 5-4 lead as he lasered a solo shot to right field to lead off the fifth.
- Bagwell worked around a pair of runners on the corners to turn in a shutdown frame in the bottom of the fifth.
- Georgia Tech tied the game with a run in the sixth.
- Senior Will Ray stranded a pair of runners to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board in the bottom of the seventh.
- Georgia Tech took a one-run lead in the eighth.
- The Deacs fell, 6-5.
